Mary Ferne Sims Lewellin, 99, of Macomb passed away at 5:55 PM Saturday July 21, 2012 at the Elms Nursing Home where she resided. She was born August 9, 1912 in Bethel Township, McDonough County to Claud and Alice (Hunter) Sims. She married Charles M. Lewellin on December 22, 1934 in Macomb. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1952. Her Parents and two brothers, William and George Sims, also preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister Zola Alexander and several nieces and nephews. Ferne resided in Colchester for many years, attending the Colchester Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for 16 years. She moved to Macomb in 1958 and was employed by Western Illinois University Food Service for over 20 years. Fern loved to sing and was active with the Spoon River Singing Seniors for over 10 years. She was a member of Maple Avenue Christian Church, where she was involved in many areas of ministry. Her heart-felt passion was for the nursing home ministry. For over 20 years, Ferne faithfully attended vesper services at the area nursing homes; organizing a group of singers she named The Glory Singers. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday July 25, 2012 at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home where visitation will be one hour prior to services at 1:00 PM. Reverend John Simmons will officiate. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Elms Nursing Home or to Maple Avenue Christian Church.
